AUGUST 19TH

THE RAMBLIN' BOYS OF PLEASURE

with BEARINGS

@STAR BAR

Doors @ 10PM

NO COVER!

This Thursday night head out to Star Bar for a chance to cool down, have a few beers, and preview some truly great tunes before another scorcher of a weekend. For the second week in a row, Beaumont's own Star Bar will play host to another traveling troop of touring yankees; this time our new friends, Bearings, hailing from Philadelphia, Penn. This Philly four-piece bears some striking similarities to the likes of bands like NOFX, Rancid, No Use For A Name, and Small Brown Bike. The band recently released their debut LP pressed on color vinyl with Runner Up Records in July of this year. "The LP consists of seven decidedly bummed out jams that sound a good deal like the No Idea bands that not so many people care about, like TRUE NORTH and SMALL BROWN BIKE." - Runner Up. If you're up for a tricky punk infusion of colorful chorus laden guitars, moody, driving bass lines, and harsh angst burdened vocals, then be sure to check these guys out on myspace and facebook before heading out to the show this Thursday night. You can preview the band's 7 song "Exist.Expire" LP in it's entirety at PunkNews.org.

True Womanhood

Hello Cheif

@ Star Bar

$2

True Womanhood will pass through Beaumont's Star Bar at the midpoint of their tour in support of their new EP Basement Membranes.  Half of this record was recorded in thier hometown of Washington, D.C. by Environmental Aesthetics and the other half in Brooklyn by Death By Audio Records.  Its a tasty mix of tart avant-pop, sweet vocals, subtle melodies amidst droning guitars and percussions meant to shake your hips.  Listenability is high- though experiemental in nature the songs are (reletively) short and interesting throughout. No 8 minute acid trips here, more like a 4 minute ride on the magic carpet.  As far as direct comparisons go True Womanhood has been compared to 90s style explorers Sonic Youth and Radiohead, however, they feel more comfortable alongside their modern contemporaries such as Beach House or Slow Dive. Joining True Womanhood is Southeast Texas' own Hello Chief. The entire band has yet to graduate High School but they're sound and footprint are definitely working a double major.

phelpy

As I retreated from the small furnace of a room where The Art Studio monthly hosts some of the Southeast Texas area's stranger and more progressive acts, I thought to myself, "Who ever heard of melodic grudge rock?". Cousin Phelpy had just concluded an engaging thirty-five minute set amidst a small crowd of perspiring fans who seemed to, for the most part, remain undaunted in the harsh face of the extreme Texas heat that radiated through the open air venue on Franklin Street. The three piece Beaumont based band consisting of Greg Busceme on guitar and vocals, Carlo Busceme on Bass and Keyboards, and Chris Sastre on drums called for crowd requests, and even managed to keep a crowd based game of "toss the beach ball" alive throughout.

Jay Electronica DL Link...

Written by Michael Molina

In florida, my internet connection was comparable to dial-up.  I've been waiting months for Jay Electronica to drop a new mixtape.  The mixtape, "Victory," was released for free on the internet while I was in Florida.  Now that I'm back on my grind at Sunrise, I am downloading it as I write.  For those unfamiliar with Jay Electronica a brief summery would include the following points:  1) He's from Dallas, TX ,by way of LA.  2)  His sound is Talib Kweli or Mos Def spitting over hipster hip-hop beats similar to those found on Kid Cudi, U-N-I, Cool Kids, or B.O.B. albums with a definate southern swagger.  3)  He discusses anthropology, metaphysics, and other interesting topics on twitter instead of what kicks he's going to wear today or drinking crystal with Diddy.  4)  He has a kid with Erykah Badu.  5)  Most of all he's one of the most refreshing voices in Hip-Hop right now (That's Hip-Hop not cRAP).  Similar Artist: Curren$y

That being said, I'm including the link to download the free mixtape "Victory."  I'm writing this before I even hear it so I'm going out on a limb, but if it is anything like everything that came before it, then I'm sure it won't disappoint and I have nothing to worry about.
